If you have jaw clicking, pain or clenching, you may wonder whether aligners will help. Here's a balanced, evidence-based answer.
Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) — often called 'TMJ' — cause jaw pain, clicking, headaches and limited opening. Causes include muscle tension, clenching, stress and joint problems. Bite alignment is one possible factor, but not the only one.
Can Invisalign Cure TMJ?
Orthodontic treatment isn't considered a primary treatment for TMD. Some patients with bite-related strain feel better after alignment, but it shouldn't be started with the expectation that it will cure jaw pain.
Can Invisalign Make TMJ Worse?
Aligners don't typically cause TMD. A few patients clench on new aligners at first; this usually settles. If jaw pain increases, tell your orthodontist.
