The first week is the biggest adjustment of the whole treatment. Here's what most patients feel, day by day, and how to make it easier.
Most of the adjustment to Invisalign happens in the first few days. By the end of week one, most of our patients forget they're wearing aligners for most of the day.
| Day | What you may notice | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Tightness and pressure, especially after attachments are placed | Put aligners in at night when you can sleep through the first hours |
| Day 2 | Peak tenderness when chewing | Soft foods; a mild pain reliever if needed, as advised |
| Day 3 | Slight lisp on 's' sounds | Read aloud for 10 minutes |
| Days 4–5 | Pressure easing; removal getting easier | Remove from the back molars first |
| Days 6–7 | Little awareness of aligners | Settle into the remove–eat–brush–reinsert routine |

TIP
Use chewies for a few minutes after inserting each aligner to seat it fully — it improves fit and comfort.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Invisalign hurt in the first week?+
Most people feel pressure, not pain, for the first 2–3 days. It's a sign the aligners are working.
How long does the Invisalign lisp last?+
Usually 2–5 days. Speaking and reading aloud helps your tongue adapt faster.
Can I take aligners out if they hurt?+
Try not to. Removing them for long periods delays adaptation and slows treatment. Call your clinic if discomfort is severe.
